Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa – the winner at Jerez in 2017 – also dug deep to put in another stunner to take second despite his ongoing recovery from a broken wrist sustained in Argentina, with Tech 3's Johann Zarco qualifying in third to make it eight times in a row the Frenchman will be starting the race from the front row.
It was a tense final shootout at the end of the session, and many eyes were on Marquez as the number 93 pushed and consistently lit up the first sectors red – and then just lost out before the line....
One of the biggest dominoes of the 2018 MotoGP Silly Season has just fallen into place with the announcement thatJohann Zarco has signed a two-year contract to race for KTM.
The move will see the in demand Frenchman switch to the orange machines for the 2019 and 2020 seasons, joining Pol Espargaro who has just announced a contract extension.
Zarco’s performances on the Tech 3 satellite Yamaha has seen his stock rise since he made his debut in the premier class last year, with many paddock insiders having him as a shoe-in to replace Dani Pedrosa at Repsol Honda.

Assen proved to be a happy hunting ground for Kawasaki as Tom Sykes and Jonny Rea secured a Team Green 1-2.
The Race Two victory was the first win for Sykes since Misano in 2017 in emphatic fashion, while championship leader Rea finished a strong second today, despite launching from the third row of the grid after winning the first Assen race on Saturday.
Sykes, who stated on pole, looked unbeatable on Sunday, running clear of his early rivals and maintaining a remarkably consistent high pace throughout.
Rea found the going tougher – the three-time champions was fourth after Lap One, then third after four laps, before taking second place on Lap Six.

Things got pretty hot in Texas in qualifying for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, with drama first striking as reigning champion Marc Marquez took a tumble on his Repsol Honda at Turn 13.
With the other riders closing in on his time as he made his way back to the Honda garage on a scooter, Marquez was able to get back out, and set a sixth pole position at the Circuit of the Americas – closely followed by a resurgent Maverick Viñales on the Yamaha.

Kawasaki rider Jonny Rea won his 12th WSBK race at Assen, extending his championship lead and closing in on the all-time win total by taking his 57th career victory.
In uncharacteristically warm and dry conditions, Rea showed his affinity with the historic Assen circuit by leading across the line in Race One for all but two laps.
He won the race by an eventual 0.981 seconds from local hero Michael van der Mark, who led for two laps on his Yamaha. But while Van der Mark was fast, he was also ragged, allowing Rea to control the race.
Rea’s third race victory of the year came after some good work in practice and qualifying, and being able to improve the pace in warm conditions, making a gap that he could control in the final few laps of the 4.542km long circuit.

Home hero Byrne had been gunning to return to the top step after 20-year-old Bradley Ray completed a double victory at the season opener. After finishing on the podium with a second place in Race One, Chaz Davies took a stunning win in Race Two at Aragon.
Starting from third row, Davies bided his time early on, then took the lead with five laps to go and never looked back.
Kawasaki's Jonny Rea pushed Davies all the way, running wide into the entry of the chicane at turn 12 and losing his chance to attack Davies on the long final corner. Rea was just 1.184 seconds back at the flag, for his fourth podium finish of the 2018 season.

Home contender Bradley Ray stormed to pole position in qualifying ahead of the second round of the BSB championship at Brands Hatch with a margin of 0.097s over reigning champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne.
A rapid qualifying session saw Ray and Byrne duel for the pole position ahead of tomorrow’s opening race, but the 20-year-old hotshot had the edge in the closing minutes to snatch the lead position from his Be Wiser Ducati rival.

Roads racing ace John McGuinness has revealed that he has had a set-back in his recovery from the broken leg he sustained in an accident at last year’s North West 200.
The 23-time TT winner, who recently signed for Norton after years of racing for Honda, broke his right tibia and fibular last year when he was thrown from his Honda Fireblade at the North West 200 course following a problem with the machine’s ECU.

Repsol Honda Team rider Dani Pedrosa has undergone surgery to his right to treat the injury suffered in a crash during Sunday’s race at the Argentina Grand Prix.
The Spaniard crashed out of the postponed race before the end of the first lap when he was pushed off the dry line following a move by Johann Zarco – violently highsiding as he tapped on the throttle on the wet asphalt.
A 3D CT scan confirmed that Dani had suffered an intra-articular fracture of the right distal radius.

Bruce Anstey is set to miss the 2018 road racing season as he battles illness, his partner has revealed.
The 48-year-old has ‘multiple tumours in his lungs and a tumour on his spine’ as well as a blood clot on the lung, meaning he is highly unlikely to take part in any form of racing this season as he focuses on recovery, but his long-term partner Anny Ramsey refuses to rule the flying Kiwi out of racing in 2018 altogether.

Jack Miller has lashed out at race organisers after shambolic scenes at yesterday’s Argentina GP round saw the race delayed as confusion reigned supreme.
The slick shod Australian poleman was the only rider on the grid as the rest of the field left the starting line-up seconds before the race was due to start to switch from wets to slicks.

20-year-old Bradley Ray celebrated his first race win in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship in the opening race of the season at Donington Park today, holding off the last lap challenge from defending champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne and James Ellison.
On the opening lap of the race home hero Leon Haslam had initially grabbed the advantage on the JG Speedfit Kawasaki after Byrne had a disastrous start off the line and dropped down the order dramatically.
Ellison was instantly on the attack and took the lead on the opening lap for the local Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha team with Ray holding third place with Jason O'Halloran and Danny Buchan in close contention.

Michael Dunlop has signed a deal with Tyco BMW to ride one of the team's Superbikes at the North West 200, Isle of Man TT and Ulster Grand Prix.
Dunlop's decision means he will be a team-mate of fellow Northern Irishman Alastair Seeley at the North West 200 in May.
Confirming the news, Dunlop admitted his relationship with the Tyco team has not always been cordial.

Aprilia’s Eugene Laverty has had a lucky escape after being run over by Jordi Torres during Lap 5 of Race Two from Thailand.
The Irishman sustained a broken pubic ramus in the racing incident. He was taken to Buriram Hospital where scans have revealed a small pelvis fracture which is not weight-bearing when standing.The news means the rider does not require surgery.
Speaking about the incident, Mv Agusta’s Torres said: “On turn six, I saw Eugene crash and unfortunately, instead of sliding to the outside, the bike came back on the track and I found Laverty right on my line. I was unable to do anything to avoid him, since he was just a few centimetres away.”
Laverty is expected to return to action soon, but he is likely to miss the next WSBK round at Aragon on April 14-15.

Reigning WSBK Champion Jonathan Rea will be one of three riders in the official Kawasaki factory squad that will line up at the Suzuka 8HR Race later this year.

Jonathan Rea has slashed Marco Melandri’s advantage in the World Superbike Championship to two points after claiming his maiden victory of 2018 in race one in Thailand on Saturday.
Rea controlled the race after securing pole position ahead of his Kawasaki team-mate Tom Sykes, and while Sykes was first over the line in the first two laps, Rea quickly took the lead.
Controlling the race from the front, Rea won by 1.550 seconds – his 40th race win in WorldSBK for Kawasaki, and the first since new regulations came in to limit Kawasaki to a lower maximum rev ceiling than any of their four-cylinder rivals. Andrea Dovizioso took top honours at the opening round of the 2018 season, holding off a determined challenge by Marc Marquez to cement his place as the second most successful racer in Ducati’s history.
The Italian rider, who started from Row 2, was unable to get a good start when the lights went out and he crossed the line at the end of the opening lap in seventh place.
However, Dovizioso dug deep, consolidated his position and then began moving up into the leading group, battling with Marquez, Rossi and Zarco before taking over at the front on lap 18.

Tech 3 pilot Johann Zarco phenomenally sealed the first pole position of the 2018 season by posting the fastest ever lap on two wheels at the Losail International Circuit.
With his remarkable time of 1’53.680 minutes, the satellite Yamaha rider smashed the 10-year-old track record at the venue in Qatar, after going straight through to Q2.
The Frenchman said: “I’m really happy, it’s truly the best way to start the season. I had a crash in FP4 and while I came away with no harm, it’s not funny to be down before the qualifying.

Aprilia has unveiled its racing platform for the 2018 MotoGP – an updated version of the Aprilia RS-GP.
The bike features a new aluminium frame, a new new carbon fibre swingarm, a new airbox and new exhaust are also new.
Other changes include a new aero package and new suspension – Öhlins TSB46 forks and an Öhlins TRSP44 rear shock..

With a masterful lap of 1:54.029 Monster Yamaha Tech3 rider Johann Zarco dominated the MotoGP field on the last day of testing before the start of the 2018 season.
The remarkable Frenchman took over the top spot with two hours to go, before he carried out a race simulation in order to be perfectly prepared for the first race, which takes place in two weeks’ time under the floodlights of the Losail International Circuit.

The second day of testing at the Losail International Circuit saw teams shift their focus to race set-up ahead of the first GP of the season on March 18, and Suzuki’s Andrea Iannone finished the session at the top of the timesheets.
While focusing mainly on finding base race settings, Iannone was able to string together a run of 15 highly consistent and quick laps. The Italian confirmed the fast pace he showed on the first day, and was once again the strongest rider through sector T2 and T4. Yamaha factory rider Maverick Viñales enjoyed a positive first day’s testing at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar, finishing the session in first place.
Viñales tried various tweaks to the basic setting, gradually improving his feeling on the bike as well as his position, slotting into second place, behind team-mate Valentino Rossi, with more than three and a half hours to go.
He spent the remaining time of the session concentrating on his riding style and setting a consistent pace – he set a 1'55.053s on lap 50 of 64 laps in total, and ended the first day in first place with a 0.051s margin over his closest rival.

The 2018 season may not even have kicked off, but Marc Marquez has become the third rider to secure his long-term future after signing a contract extension with Honda to stay with the Repsol team for two more years, for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
Marquez said: “I’m excited to continue to race for Honda’s factory team in the MotoGP class. I’m proud to race as a member of the Honda family, and I appreciate how Honda and the team always do their best to provide me with everything I need. I would also like to thank everyone who has given me such warm support over the years. The first two official tests went well and, with my contract renewed, I can focus on racing in the new season.
